If you were incarcerated in Suffolk County Correctional Facilities (SCCF) in Riverhead or Yaphank between April 5, 2009, and May 27, 2025, you may be eligible for a share of an $18 million settlement over unconstitutional jail conditions. Claims must be submitted by December 3, 2025.
Why the Lawsuit Exists
A class action lawsuit alleged that inmates at SCCF were subjected to unconstitutional conditions, including:
Exposure to human waste, mold, rust, and vermin
Freezing temperatures and unsafe living conditions
These conditions are claimed to violate the Eighth Amendment (cruel and unusual punishment) and the Fourteenth Amendment (due process). Suffolk County denies wrongdoing but agreed to an $18 million settlement and to improve facility conditions.
Who Qualifies
You are eligible if you:
Were detained or incarcerated in SCCF (Riverhead or Yaphank) during the class period: April 5, 2009 – May 27, 2025
Were not housed exclusively in the Yaphank facility that opened in 2013
