Trader Joe’s $7.4 Million Credit/Debit Card Class Action Settlement

If you shopped at Trader Joe’s in 2019 and paid with a credit or debit card, there may be money waiting for you. A $7.4 million class action settlement has been reached over allegations that certain receipts printed sensitive card information.

What happened?

This case, Keim v. Trader Joe’s Co., alleges that during a specific period in 2019, some Trader Joe’s stores printed credit and debit card receipts that displayed the first six and last four digits of customers’ card numbers.

The lawsuit claims this violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), which is designed to protect consumers from identity theft risks tied to exposed payment information.

Trader Joe’s denies any wrongdoing, but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation. The Court has not decided who is right or wrong.

Who is eligible?

You may be part of the settlement class if:

  • You are the account holder of a credit or debit card, AND
  • You made a purchase at a Trader Joe’s store between March 5, 2019 and July 19, 2019, AND
  • Your receipt from that transaction showed the first six and last four digits of your card number

Important notes:

  • Not all Trader Joe’s stores are included
  • It only applies to specific transactions during the class period
  • Eligibility is tied to the cardholder, not someone who simply paid on behalf of another person

How much money can you get?

Eligible class members who submit a valid claim may receive an estimated:

  • About $102.45 per person

This is a pro rata payment, meaning:

  • If fewer people claim → payments may increase
  • If more people claim → payments may decrease

The final amount depends on:

  • Number of valid claims submitted
  • Settlement administration costs and legal fees
  • Court-approved distribution calculations

Unclaimed funds will eventually be donated to the Identity Theft Resource Center.
