Tesla Recalls Powerwall 2 AC Battery Systems Due to Fire & Burn Hazards

Tesla is recalling about 10,500 Powerwall 2 AC Battery Systems because the lithium-ion cells can overheat, causing the unit to stop functioning and, in some reported cases, produce smoke or flames. This poses a fire and burn hazard that could lead to serious injury or death.

Tesla has reported 22 overheating incidents, including 6 cases of smoking and 5 fires, which caused minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

The recall includes certain Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Systems sold:

  • Model: Powerwall 2

  • Where sold: Tesla.com/powerwall and certified Tesla installers nationwide

  • When sold: November 2020 – December 2022

  • Model identification:Powerwall 2” printed on the nameplate label on the side of the unit

What You Should Do

Here’s what Tesla recommends for owners of potentially affected systems:

  • Make sure your Powerwall 2 is online.

  • Check the Tesla App to see if your unit is included in the recall.

  • If it is, Tesla has already remotely discharged the battery (removed stored energy) to prevent overheating until your replacement is installed.

  • Do not attempt repairs yourself.

  • Tesla will replace affected units at no cost.
