$30M Los Angeles County Juvenile Detention Facilities Settlement

Los Angeles County has agreed to pay $30 million to settle a class action lawsuit over the treatment of youth in juvenile detention facilities. The case claims that young people held in county halls and camps were subjected to inhumane and abusive conditions — including excessive use of force, chemical sprays, and solitary confinement.

This settlement offers real compensation to those affected. Here’s what you need to know.

Why is there a lawsuit?

The lawsuit alleged that Los Angeles County violated the civil rights of juvenile offenders by allowing harsh, unsafe, and abusive practices in its detention facilities — such as physical restraints, solitary confinement, and excessive force.

While the county has not admitted wrongdoing, it agreed to this $30 million settlement to resolve the claims and provide relief to impacted individuals.

Who qualifies?

You may be part of the settlement if you:

  • Were born on or after February 15, 2002, and

  • Were detained in a Los Angeles County juvenile hall or camp (such as Central Juvenile Hall or Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall).

How much can people get?

Payments will depend on how long each person was detained — with juvenile hall days valued higher than camp days due to harsher conditions.

Class members may receive an average payout of around $7,000, though some may get more or less depending on their detention time and the total number of valid claims filed.

Any leftover funds will go to a nonprofit organization chosen by the plaintiffs’ lawyers and the county.
