Veterans with a 30% or higher service-connected disability rating who were denied or lost employment at the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) between August 20, 2018, and June 17, 2025, may be eligible for compensation.
Why is there a lawsuit?
A class action lawsuit alleged that the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) discriminated against disabled veterans by denying them employment opportunities or terminating their jobs.
According to the case, the BOP allegedly:
Withdrew job offers,
Terminated employees, or
Removed applicants from consideration
…because the agency failed to rely on current medical documentation when determining whether these veterans were medically qualified for employment.
The U.S. Department of Justice, which oversees the BOP, has not admitted wrongdoing, but agreed to settle the claims to resolve the dispute.
Settlement Amount: $7.9 million
Purpose: To compensate affected veterans and fund changes in BOP hiring policies
Policy Changes: The BOP will revise how it evaluates the medical qualifications of veterans with disabilities moving forward
Payments will vary depending on each claimant’s circumstances — veterans who were terminated or had conditional job offers withdrawn may receive larger shares of the settlement fund.
Who qualifies?
You may be part of the settlement if you meet all of the following criteria:
You are a veteran with a 30% or higher service-connected disability rating
Between August 20, 2018, and June 17, 2025, the Federal Bureau of Prisons:
Terminated your employment, or
Withdrew your conditional job offer, or
Removed you from consideration for employment
The BOP’s decision was based on its failure to rely on current medical documentation regarding your ability to perform the job
If you received a notice by mail or email from the settlement administrator (Angeion Group), the agency’s records indicate that you are included in the class.
How much can people get?
Each eligible class member can receive a cash payment from the $7.9 million settlement fund.
Exact amounts will depend on:
The harm suffered (e.g., termination vs. withdrawn offer)
The number of valid claims filed
The severity of impact based on the information provided in the claim form
To ensure fair distribution, the Claims Administrator will review each claim individually and confidentially.
What Are Your Options?
When submitting your claim, be as detailed as possible. You may need to provide:
Your VA disability rating documentation (e.g., decision letter)
Relevant medical documentation or a letter from a healthcare provider
All information you submit will be kept confidential and will not be shared with the Agency.
