Cash App $12.5M Settlement: Washington Residents Could Get $147 Each

If you ever got one of those “Hey! Try Cash App and get $5!” referral texts while living in Washington, you might be owed money from a $12.5 million class action settlement with Block, Inc. (Cash App’s parent company).

Why is there a lawsuit?

The lawsuit, Bottoms v. Block, Inc., claims that Cash App violated Washington law by helping users send unsolicited commercial text messages through its “Invite Friends” program.

Those messages encouraged people to join Cash App but were allegedly sent without recipients’ consent, which could violate Washington’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act (CEMA) and Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

Block denies any wrongdoing and says it complied with all laws. The Court hasn’t decided who’s right—but Block agreed to a $12.5 million settlement fund to resolve the claims.

Who qualifies?

You’re included in this settlement if you:

  • Received a Cash App referral program text message between November 14, 2019, and August 7, 2025,

  • Lived in Washington when you got the text, and

  • Did not clearly and affirmatively consent to receive it.

Example message:

“Hey! I’ve been using Cash App to send money and spend using the Cash Card. Try it using my code and you’ll get $5. [link]”

If that looks familiar and you lived in Washington at the time, you may qualify.

How much can people get?

Each eligible class member who submits a valid claim is expected to receive between $88 and $147, depending on how many claims are filed.

Payments will come from the $12.5 million settlement fund, after deducting administrative costs, legal fees, and court-approved service awards.

Proof Required:
You’ll need to provide:

  • The phone number where you received the Cash App referral text

  • A certification that you:

    • Own or regularly use that number

    • Lived in Washington when you received the message

    • Did not consent to receive Cash App referral texts

No additional documentation (like screenshots) is required.
