If you worked at a Speedway in Illinois between Sept. 1, 2012 and Nov. 1, 2017 and used a fingerprint scanner to clock in or out, you could automatically receive a payment of about $970 from a new class action settlement.
Here’s what you need to know
Why is there a lawsuit?
Speedway workers alleged the company violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by requiring employees to scan their fingerprints without:
Getting written consent
Providing disclosures about how biometric data would be used and stored
Speedway denies wrongdoing but agreed to a $12,122,775 settlement to resolve the claims.
Who qualifies?
You are part of the settlement if you:
Worked for Speedway in Illinois
Scanned your fingerprint on a time clock between September 1, 2012 and November 1, 2017
How much can people get?
Each class member will receive an equal share of the settlement fund
Estimated payout: around $970 per person
Final payment may be higher or lower, depending on the number of eligible workers
