AARP has agreed to a $12.5 million settlement to resolve claims that it shared members’ private video-viewing information with Facebook without permission. The lawsuit says this violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) — a law that protects consumers’ video-watching habits from being disclosed.
If you were an AARP.org user who also had a Facebook account during the eligible period, you could be owed up to $237.
Why is there a lawsuit?
The lawsuit claimed that AARP used Meta Pixel, a tracking tool from Facebook, on its website. This allegedly allowed Facebook to access user data — including who you are and what videos you watched on AARP.org — without proper consent.
While AARP denies any wrongdoing, it agreed to settle the case to avoid ongoing litigation and strengthen privacy protections on its site.
As part of the settlement, AARP also agreed to limit Meta Pixel tracking on its video pages to better safeguard users’ privacy going forward.
Who qualifies?
You may be included in this settlement if you:
Were an AARP member or registered user of AARP.org,
Accessed or viewed video content on AARP.org in the U.S., and
Had a Facebook account at the same time,
Between September 27, 2020, and September 12, 2025.
How much can people get?
Each eligible class member can expect a cash payment estimated between $47 and $237, depending on the number of valid claims submitted.
Your final payment amount will depend on how many people file claims — fewer claims mean higher payouts.
